Rewind Therapy for Trauma and PTSD

Introduction to Rewind Therapy

Rewind Therapy, introduced by Dr. David Muss in 1991, is a ground-breaking treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In his article A New Technique for Treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder published in the British Journal of Clinical Psychology, Muss detailed a study involving 19 policemen with PTSD. Remarkably, after two years, all participants showed significant improvement, returned to work, and experienced no relapses.

How Rewind Therapy Works

Rewind Therapy, based on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), is also known as the Visual Dissociation Technique. It helps reduce or even eliminate PTSD symptoms quickly—sometimes within the same day of therapy but usually within a month. Specifically, Rewind Therapy addresses symptoms such as:

  • Flashbacks
  • Intrusive thoughts or images
  • Repeated nightmares

In addition, Rewind Therapy is effective in treating various phobias, including fear of dogs, needles, or flying. It can also help individuals recover from one-time traumatic events, such as car accidents or other distressing incidents. For these cases, clients typically require several sessions.

Rewind Therapy for Complex Trauma

Rewind Therapy is also beneficial for individuals experiencing more complex traumas, including:

  • Sexual abuse
  • Mental or domestic abuse
  • Recovery from traumatic separation or divorce
  • Witnessing a tragic or shocking event

What Makes Rewind Therapy Unique?

Unlike traditional trauma therapies, Rewind Therapy does not require clients to disclose traumatic event details to the therapist. This approach, often called “closure without disclosure,” makes it particularly effective for those who find it difficult to revisit painful memories.

Benefits of Non-Disclosure

The advantages of not having to discuss traumatic details are significant:

  • It minimizes the risk of re-traumatization.
  • It removes the fear of sharing sensitive information, such as deployment experiences for servicemen.
  • Survivors of sexual abuse or rape can heal without reliving distressing moments with a stranger.

How Rewind Therapy Helps

Rewind Therapy works by eliminating the involuntary recall of traumatic events. Once the traumatic memory is processed, it is stored properly in the brain, giving the client full control over it. However, voluntary recall remains available whenever needed.

Treatment for Single-Event Trauma

For single-event traumas, such as car accidents or specific distressing incidents, two to three sessions are typically required.

Treatment for Multiple Traumas

For multiple-event traumas—such as combat trauma, sexual abuse, or domestic violence—each event can be addressed in separate sessions. However, depending on how the involuntary recall manifests, it may be possible to treat all events in just one session.

Book Your Initial Assessment

If you believe Rewind Therapy could help you, don’t hesitate to book an initial assessment. During this appointment, we will discuss whether the therapy suits your needs and estimate the number of sessions required.

Session Duration and Cost

Rewind Therapy sessions typically last 1 hour and 30 minutes, ensuring enough time to complete the process. The cost per session is £85.
